November Lunch: I-15 Smart Freeway

In June, RCTC and Caltrans activated the I-15 Smart Freeway Pilot.

It’s the first system of its kind in the state. Along eight miles of northbound I-15 between the San Diego County line and the I-15/I-215 interchange, coordinated ramp meters at Temecula Parkway, Rancho California Road, and Winchester Road now adjust in real time to freeway conditions, with variable speed advisories posted on overhead signs. The $33 million pilot runs two years, and the results will shape whether the approach gets deployed elsewhere in California.

Erik Galloway, P.E., Project Delivery Director at RCTC, joins us to talk through delivery of the pilot and what the data is showing so far.
